lightPaths

July 6, 2010

lightPaths are long exposure shots capturing torchlight. You basically set up the camera on a tripod, hit the remote release and then jump around in the shot with a torch.

I use a maglite torch and have a couple of colour filters (blue & red) the torch can be set to pinpoint light or with a wider beam depending on the effect you want.

Best settings I have found for the camera are 17-85mm lens with focal point of close to the 17mm. fstop at 11 iso 100 and either set the shutter to bulb or 30 secs.

remember the tripod and remote release.

These work best if taken at night, so set up the camera beforehand.

Find a flat open area and set up the tripod with camera.

Stand/perform about 3m from camera……you can get in closer or further away but I find around 3m is best.

Pitch black is best so Autumn/Wimter/Spring evenings. You can get some neat effects if there is a little light.
